Dr. Laurent Bernard

Laurent Bernard is a Senior Graphene Engineer at SmartIR, where he plays a key role in the development, fabrication, and testing of advanced graphene-based thermal management systems for space and defence applications. Since joining SmartIR in 2022, he has been instrumental in scaling up lab-to-device processes and ensuring the performance of SmartIR’s adaptive emissivity technology in mission-critical environments.

Laurent brings a strong international background in 2D materials, graphene, with over a decade of hands-on research and engineering experience across leading institutions. Prior to SmartIR, he worked as Laboratory Manager for Magnets and Superconductors in France, overseeing experimental operations in advanced materials development. He also served as a Consultant for SERELIO, providing technical expertise on materials systems and innovation-driven projects.

From 2016 to 2018, Laurent was a Research Scientist at the National University of Singapore, contributing to pioneering work at the Centre for Advanced 2D Materials, one of the world’s leading hubs for graphene research. His academic foundation was built at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne), where he spent four years as a Doctoral Assistant in the Laboratory of Physics of Complex Matter, followed by early research internships at Berkeley Lab and Imperial College London.

With a robust blend of academic depth and industrial insight, Laurent supports SmartIR’s mission by driving material innovation and ensuring engineering excellence in the development of next-generation graphene technologies.
